Flying Lotus (Warp) While there’s no question that Flying Lotus’ roots are in hip-hop, there is an undeniable influence from growing up in and around the Coltrane family. In particular sharing music and ideas with his great aunt Alice Coltrane before her recent death has meant that the music he’s creating is something new, something transforming and international. This mind set and playing shows around the world has allowed the young gun a window into scenes across the globe which are reflected in his own music, “Hearing dubstep in London, the new stuff from Paris, cats in Glasgow…the best part is seeing how excited folks are to hear new sounds, cats freak out!” he says. So feel free to freak out to Reset until the upcoming album makes it way into your hands…and what to expect then? Says the man himself, “Some new tricks”. Forthcoming Reset EP out on Warp Recordings this spring.
Dhruva (Sub Swara, NY) Dhruva is a producer, DJ, percussionist and co-founder from NYC's Sub Swara crew. Sub Swara represents the best in lo-frequency hi-vibration culture that spans sonics from dubstep, dancehall, and jungle, to breakbeat, midtempo, and glitch hop, all mixed with a global sensibility. Having made a mark through their acclaimed monthly club night (now in its third year at NYC's finest soundsystem at Love) and blazing live sets, Sub Swara is currently putting the finishing touches on their eagerly anticipated debut album, due out in Summer 2008. The lead producer for the album, Dhruva's tracks have been featured and hyped by tastemakers from BBC Radio 1 (Maryanne Hobbs, John Peel, Bobby Friction, Pathaan, and more), Pitchfork Media and DJs across the globe. Like his tracks, Dhruva's DJ sets defy genre and bring irresistible bass weight to the dancefloor. Look out for his massive crossover dubstep joint, Koli Stance (produced alongside Sub Swara bredren, Sharmaji, coming out on Low Motion Records) and exclusive advance digital releases through www.subswara.com this spring leading up to the full length Sub Swara album this summer!
Ras Gilbert (Shashamani Soundsystem) - Ras Gilbert aka Ras G, the master-mind behind Shashamani Soundsystem, and proclaimed mix master mixologist, sees himself as a "Rasta Music Dub Warrior" who seeks to uplift the standard where the presentation of reggae music in all its facets is concerned pushing the heavy steppaz sounds of the UK to the Bay Area. Since 1999, Ras Gilbert has been making some of the most unique, and highly appraised mix cd's in the reggae scene and producing high profile fundraisers in the bay area. Since 2006, over 12 new volumes have been released and dispersed globally, and since 2007 Ras G has been consciously creeping back into the club scene to share what he calls an "inter-galactic alchemic Rastafari music experience". Don’t miss one his last Bay Area appearances before heading back to the Lonestar state.
